ABOUT
Mr. Mike McCann
My life has had many twists and turns through the years that have allowed me to meet different people and experience a lot of events that has helped me become the person I am today.
My family lived in Austin, NC, until I was in the fourth grade; then we moved to Wilkesboro where my dad was a Civil Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. My parents instilled the importance of education in me as both of them went to college and earned advanced degrees in their fields of work. It didn’t hurt either that my grandmother graduated from Appalachian Teachers College in the 1920’s – early 30’s. This set the precedent for me in whatever field of study I choose, which was education, and helped motivate me to my present position of History Teacher and Coach.
When I graduated from high school, I went to Western Carolina University for a little while before choosing to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. This decision changed my life and set me on the path to success with characteristics of discipline, determination, desire and integrity. I was in the Marines from December of 1989 until December of 1997. The last part of my enlistment was in the Reserves and allowed me to get my college degree at Appalachian State University in 1995 in Physical Education K-12 and Secondary History.
My first job was at East Iredell Middle School from Feb. 1996 until June of that same year. I then went to work at Elkin High School from August of 1996 until July of 1998. That same year, my daughter, Elizabeth was born in May of 1997. While I was there I taught middle school math, science, history and physical education. I was also an assistant football coach and the head varsity baseball coach until 1998 when I transferred to Starmount High School.
When I went to Starmount, I originally taught Girls Weightlifting and Boys Advanced PE for the first two years. During my years at SHS, not only did I teach U.S. History and Weightlifting, but I had also been an assistant football coach, head wrestling coach (from 2000-2005) and the head baseball coach from 2005-2013. In 2012, I decided to enroll in college to become a principal, something I had put off for several years. I registered and was accepted to Gardner-Webb University, which I attended for one and a half years and graduated in August of 2013.
My wife, Lori, and I have been married since August 4th, 2017. We were married on the beach at Topsail Island, NC. We have 3 children: a daughter, Camryn, who is in the 11th grade at Starmount High School; a son, Luke, who is 24 and my daughter Elizabeth who is 23. Luke graduated from Appalachian State University in December of 2019 and Elizabeth will graduate in December of 2020 from Appalachian State University as well.
From January 2014 until June 30, 2018 I was an Assistant Principal at SHS. I am and was blessed to have been able to spend 20 years at Starmount High School and work with the surrounding communities that make up the high school. Starmount is a special place and will always be a special place to my family and I.
In 2018, I took on a new position as Assistant Principal at Forbush Middle School. My family and I enjoyed this opportunity getting to meet and work with the faculty, staff, students and community members of that school as we worked to set high goals and standards for our young people to achieve.
2019 provided me an opportunity to get back into the classroom and teach and coach high school students at Wilkes Central High School. Teaching and coaching at the high school level is my WHY! I enjoy being a positive influence in young peoples life during a very trying time in their educational and physical development in becoming young adults. I taught American History I and II and was an assistant football coach and head wrestling coach for the 2019-2020 school year. Going to WCHS was going back home to me since I graduated from there in 1987. I was able to reconnect with old friends as their children were now coming through the school. I was also able to meet and make new friends who have impacted my personal life and professional life greatly.
This school year I am back at the RAM HOUSE as a teacher and coach again!! This school year starts my 25th year in education and I am excited to see what great things are ahead for this school year. ONCE A RAM, ALWAYS A RAM!!!
